Finally, I am a strong proponent of hands-on experience for learning what good food looks and tastes like, so cooking is one of my favorite ways to teach the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. Luck appears at a moment in time when people need it the most. When all of one’s knowledge, experience and skills have been exhausted, luck can alter given circumstances thus allowing people to push past difficult situations. Luck can be defined as a spontaneous change or stroke of good fortune that alters a seemingly unchangeable situation for the better. On account of luck’s elusive nature, most societies do not believe it exists at all: these nonbelievers view a situation altered by luck as instead events as containing controllable factors, which through perseverance can be overcome by human ingenuity and the ability to look for alternate solutions. In cases of extraordinary luck, these nonbelievers easily view them as purely circumstantial. Yet luck is undeniably present whether it be in day-to-day life, or the stroke of luck that changes the course of someone’s life. Luck played a major role in the true story of Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voya ge. The experienced captain and crew could not foresee the dire circumstances they would endure. Their survival was in thanks to luck providing them food, water, and favorable environmental conditions, and not due to their own abilities or realities. In the case of this true story, their experience and ingenuity was helpful, but could not have saved them alone, only with luck were they able to survive. Two miraculous events saved the lives of the crew after they had depleted all their available rations. The crew of the Endurance began running out of food due to the unexpected thickness of ice cap that would not permit their ship to advance. Their only option was to test and see what would give out first their rations or the massive ice caps. â€Å"The food situation was also far from reassuring. †¦ But on January 1, it seemed that the New Year might have brought with it a change of luck† (Lansing 127). Orde-Lees walked around the ice one day searching for food, as everyone was starving. Suddenly, he encountered a huge and aggressive leopard seal. He cried in fear knowing this was a life or death situation that would likely result in the leopard seals aggression killing him. Luckily, Frank Wild ran out of his tent and shot the leopard seal that was thirty-feet away from the men. The leopard seal’s arrival can be seen as luck. The men were on the edge of dying fro m starvation and within a moment had hundred of pounds of meat. This seal only lasted a few weeks, and the men once again faced a serious lack of provisions. With amazing coincidence, the unexpected appearance of another leopard seal, even larger than the last one, changed their luck once again thus providing them with a needed food source. Wild was able to change the dire living quality of the crew with one lucky bullet: â€Å"With one bullet, it seemed, Wild had changed the whole complexion of their lives. †¦ nearly 1,000 pounds of meat—and at least two weeks’ supply† (162). These two events occurred when the crew had run out of any options to ration or conserve food to survive any longer. Their wit and experience was often meaningless on account of their situations, it was the instances of luck that propelled the men forward. With luck on their side, the men endured a grueling journey to Elephant Island, not only survived but also found the water necessary to sustain them. The melting of the ice floes around them forced the men to moved from their current location into three small boats to try to find Elephant Island: the closest known island. They prepared by bringing the remaining food and water with them in the boats so they might ration these things based on how long they thought it would take to get there. The journey took much longer than expected and their water supply began to run dangerously low. Water shortage concerned the men, as living without water is physically impossible. â€Å"†¦the men’s thirst was now so intense that few of them could eat [their food ration]† (208). The men hit rock bottom when their luck began to turnaround. They spotted Elephant Island in the distance and landed on the island. Incredibly, the crew noticed fresh running water flowing down from the si de of the mountain. Immediately, the men began greedily drinking to quench their thirst. â€Å"A moment later they were chewing and sucking greedily, and the delicious water was running down their throats† (215). This miraculous event is a stroke of luck, because the men did not know that Elephant Island would provide them with the water they so desperately needed to survive. In the environment they were in, they had no way of knowing if this trip would be beneficial or if they were even going to survive it. They placed their lives in the hands of luck, and were provided with the exact resource they needed. Once again their survival was beyond their own abilities and luck provided the necessities to continue on. The men were initially happy at Elephant Island, but the captain realized they had to start looking for a way to be rescued or they would never live. Shackleton made the decision to leave Frank Wild in charge of the men while he took five men in a boat to search for South Georgia Island. This was their only hope for rescue from where they began their expedition over a year ago. Knowing South Georgia Island had a whaling station, Shackleton calculated enough supplies for four weeks because if the journey took any longer then the boat and its crew would most likely be lost at sea due to limited navigation technology of 1914. Their navigator, Worsley was working with just a sextant and a compass, and was unsure if he would be able to keep them moving in the right direction. â€Å"Shackleton asked Worsley how accurate he thought their navigation had been. Worsley shook his head. With luck, he said, maybe within 10 miles, but it was always possible to make a mistake† (305). The six men in the smaller James Caird had to battle through one of the stormiest open water conditions, which made navigation all the more difficult. They had no idea if they were heading in the right direction and only brought a certain amount of supplies, but against all odds still were able to land on South Georgia Island. Luck was on Worsley’s side more than his navigational skills were at work with them finding the island instead of being lost in the ocean. When they finally saw the island, â€Å"Shackleton was the only one who spoke. â€Å"We’ve done it,†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ Feeble foolish grins spread across their faces, not of triumph or even joy, but simply of unspeakable relief† (311). The men were so surprised and speechless that they had reached South Georgia Island because they thought their luck had run out; the odds of successfully navigating to rescue were slim at best, but with luck they found sanctuary. The Endurance crew survived the unimaginable. They began their expedition with an experienced captain and a very organized plan to be the first people to cross Antarctica. Their mission took a turn for the worse when their ship became immobilized in the ice caps and they had to go into survival mode. The crew brought enough food, water and supplies for the planned expedition duration, but as time passed they soon began to run out of food and water. Even more concerning, was the lack of options to obtain food and water. Starvation and dehydration became the men’s worst fear, and these fears were quickly realized. In addition, the navigational systems of 1914 supported their planned expedition but were not sufficient to ensure their safety. The environmental conditions of the ice floes forced them to leave the sinking ship and when they realized that no rescue operation would be looking for them, they began the treacherous path to find their way to safety. The men required the a id of luck to survive the movement of the ice floes, the severe weather conditions, and successfully use their limited navigational aides. With the extreme conditions of this journey, the captain and crew would have never made it out this situation alive on their own abilities alone. The survival of the whole crew, in events beyond their control, can only be attributed to a significant amount of good luck.

A businessman. An artist. He is everything it takes to be a successful entrepreneur and designer. His ambition and persistence has led him to be one of the most influential designers in fashion. Thomas Carlyle Ford was born on August 27, 1961 in Austin Texas. His parents Tom Ford Sr. and Shirley Bunton both worked as real estate agents so Ford spent a lot of time with his grandparents on their ranch in Brownwood Texas. When he was eleven years old his family moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Ford graduated from Santa Fe Preparatory School in 1979 at 17 years old. He wasted no time and continued his education at New York University as an art history major that same year. While attending NYU, Ford became a regular at Studio 54 nightclub causing his academics to suffer. A year later he dropped out and moved to Los Angeles to act in commercials. There was a point where he was in twelve national advertising campaigns at the same time (2). A few years later he continued his education in the Parsons School of Design in New York where he studied architecture. Ford transferred to Parson’s Paris campus for a year and a half where he worked as an intern for Chloe’s press office. Chloe is a French fashion house founded in 1952 which coined the term ‘pret-a-porter’ which means Ready-To-Wear (2). This internship triggered his love for fashion and although he spent his last year of school studying fashion, he graduated from Parsons with a degree in architecture. According to Tom Ford, architecture was too serious. â€Å"I realized that fashion was the right balance between art and commerce, and that was it. (1). After graduating from Parsons in 1985 Ford wanted to pursue a career in fashion. He drew up a portfolio and when interviewing for jobs he mentioned that he went to Parsons, a school know for art and design, however he left out that he graduated in architecture (3). He also said that his work at Chloe was a â€Å"low-level public relations position† rather than an internship (2). What Ford lacked in expe rience in the fashion industry he made up for with his drive and perseverance. Adamant about landing a job with Cathy Hardwick, a well-known sportswear designer, Ford called Hardwick’s office every day for a month straight. Annoyed by his daily calls Cathy finally answered his call to see how soon he could take a meeting. About two minutes later Ford arrived in her office because he had been calling from the lobby. Impressed by his persistence Hardwick hired Ford as a design assistant. In 1988, Ford landed a job designing jeans for Perry Ellis in New York where he knew the company’s president (Robert Mcdonald) and designer (Marc Jacobs) socially. After a brief two years Ford grew tired of working in American fashion. Ford commented â€Å"If I was ever going to become a good designer, I had to leave America. My own culture was inhibiting me. Too much style in America is tacky. Europeans, however, appreciate style. (2). Staying true to his word, Ford moved to Milan in 1990 as the chief ready-to-wear Designer of Gucci. Gucci at the time was struggling to keep up with market trends and â€Å"no one would dream of wearing Gucci† according to Dawn Mello, the creative director at the time (2). Mello hired Ford because most other people weren’t interested in the job however Ford rapidly brought Gucci back to life. Within six months he was designing menswear and by 1992 Ford was promoted to design director heading the brand’s ready-to-wear fragrances, image and store design. By 1994 Ford became the creative director and was credited with â€Å"putting the glamour back into fashion† (2). Ford completely revamped Gucci’s image with updated retro looks that oozed sex appeal (2). He introduced the company into new ventures such as men’s and women’s sportswear, eveningwear and home furnishings. Ford also led Gucci to acquire Yves Saint Laurent where he was also named the creative director. Ford was working eighteen hour days and designing sixteen collections per year (3). Ford resigned from the Gucci in 2004 after Pinault Printemps Redoute bought it. Over the course of a decade, Ford took an almost bankrupt company and increased their annual sales to $3 billion (1). By 1999 Gucci was valued at $4. 3 billion and when Ford left in 2004 it was valued at $10 billion (2). Fortunately for Tom Ford all his success at with Gucci was just the beginning. Early in 2005 Ford announced the opening of his film production company Fade to Black. Four years later Ford debuted A Single Man which he co-wrote, directed and produced. Based on the novel A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood, Ford put a lot of personal emotion into making this movie and admitted that it was like having an on screen mid-life crisis (3). It was nominated for a Golden Lion award as well as two Independent Spirit Awards for best first feature and best first screenplay (2). In April 2005 Ford also announced the creation of the Tom Ford brand, a partnership to produce and distribute optical frames and sunglasses and an alliance with Estee Lauder to create a beauty brand. In 2007 Ford opened his first store and debuted the Tom Ford menswear and accessory collection (1). Finally in 2010 Ford presented the much anticipated womenswear collection during an intimate old fashioned runway show. He chose iconic women of all ages and body sizes, such as Beyonce Knowles and Julianne Moore, because ultimately it is about individuality (3). Initially Ford was not going to launch a womenswear collection because he said it was so grueling all those years however he eventually gave in and did what he does best (3). In 2011 Ford launched a complete cosmetics collection. There are currently 15 private blend and six signature fragrances in the Tom Ford beauty collection as well as 49 freestanding Tom Ford stores all over the world. As if this overachiever doesn’t have enough projects he has also kept busy by styling Justin Timberlake since 2011. Ford has styled Timberlake for the Oscars, the Grammys, the Brit Awards, the SAG awards and his wedding. Focusing on a young rat pack fantasy look has worked for Timberlake and Ford has created a whole new persona through the way he has styled Timberlake. â€Å"When you’re someone in your early 50s and a major global pop star who’s barely 30 identifies with your style and wants you to make all his clothes, you think I’m still valid,† said Ford (4). Fords first inspirations came from his mother and grandmother. His mother was chic and classy while his grandmother had Texas flair with everything big and flashy. Although these are two different looks, Ford found a way to combine the two when he reinvented Gucci. According to Ford The images of beauty you get in your childhood stick with you for life (1). Ford is also inspired by his female friends with great style which usually includes women with jobs, kids and lives. He is also inspired by life itself and is appreciative of the architecture and construction of things. According to Ford, when he designs it is intuitive. Tom Ford is openly gay, and he and his partner, fashion journalist Richard Buckley, have been in a long term monogamous relationship since 1986. They own two smooth fox terriers, Angus and India. In September 2012 they announced the birth of their son, Alexander John Buckley Ford. Tom Ford has been one of the most influential designers of the world for the last 20 years. This man is extremely accomplished and admits that 90 percent of his success comes from his drive (3). Not only was he able to revive and reinvent a company that was nearly extinct but he turned Gucci into one of the largest and most profitable luxury brands in the world. He has won numerous fashion awards for his work not only with Gucci but with the Tom Ford brand as well. He has won five Council of Fashion Designers of America awards, four VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards and was named 2001s GQ designer of the year. This man is unstoppable and his story is truly inspiring.
